National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day

Happy National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day!  What?  You didn't know?  You didn't get me anything?  Well that's okay, there's always next year.

Whenever someone mentions raisins to me, I usually think back to the disappointment I had as a kid when my Mom would sneak a box into my lunch bag.  Or, I remember that one weird house on the block that used to give out raisins every year on Halloween (why did I keep going back?  I guess I'm a glutton for punishment). In all honesty, I really do kind of like raisins...they seem to have a habit though of showing up when I least expect them (usually when I'm anticipating some kind of not-so-healthy wonderfully sugary snack).  I guess it's just bad timing that gives them a bad rap.  But whatever it is, I'm betting you can understand my confusion/dismay on how these sneaky little devils managed their way into Lake Champlain Chocolates.  Surely there are plenty other delicious fruits we could smother in chocolate? Who decided on raisins? (hmm, maybe my crazy neighbors secretly moved up to VT to become chocolatiers?)

Anyways, I think it took me a good three months after I started working here to finally give our Milk Chocolate Covered Raisins a try (in the spirit of full disclosure, I didn't actually seek them out, the free sample bowl in our retail store found me).  All I can say is WOW - was I wrong!  All those months wasted!  The raisins are giants - so juicy, not in the least bit dry (they're actually Franny's Raisins, which also happen to be organic).  And they're covered in just the right amount of milk chocolate to satisfy your sweet craving, but not too much that you can't still kid yourself that you're having a healthy snack.  Really, it's a "dieter's" dream come true!

But seriously, I guess what I'm trying to say here is that some foods you hated as a kid can all the sudden become deliciously grown up.  So you may just want to give them another try...you might surprise yourself!

Next on my list - pimento loaf.  Despite this lesson, I still have my doubts...
